Our design for chef Michael Shikany’s first restaurant in Miami employs the use of simple elements that have been iterated to generate a beautifully intricate pattern applied to vertical surfaces and carried through to the custom furniture.
Inspired by Luis Tomasello's 1950's explorations on optical art, we created a series of panels with different sequence arrangements. We made these into maps, which coincidentally resembled cellular automata images, something we obsessed with during our years at Columbia.
Precisely positioned pieces, slightly angled faces, color accents, added and deleted elements all come together to generate choreographed variations to a textile like pattern with subtly differentiated applications to both interior and exterior spaces. We figured a field of beauty and intricacy would be the perfect compliment to the depth and complex flavors to be tasted and experienced in the space.
